About Us

Vision

We envision a society rooted in reproductive justice that addresses the systemic barriers of racism, poverty, immigration, criminalization, and gender oppression.

Mission

To uphold bodily autonomy, advance racial equity, and dismantle systemic barriers to care through culturally relevant, holistic pre- and postnatal services— reducing infant and maternal mortality one birth at a time.

Who We Serve

BA NIA provides holistic, reproductive justice–centered health services for women and birthing people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, transgender and nonbinary people, immigrants, and people impacted by incarceration—regardless of socioeconomic status.

Our Story

BA NIA Inc. began in the early 1990s as a Black women–led circle, fighting for the health, dignity, and autonomy of mothers and families. Rooted in collective care, shared wisdom, and cultural tradition, this circle grew through years of study, practice, and deep community connection.

Just a few years later, in 1994, twelve Black women in Illinois coined the term Reproductive Justice, naming a framework that centers bodily autonomy, racial equity, and the right to parent in safe, sustainable communities. BA NIA’s work emerged from the same soil—part of a long legacy of Black women organizing for health, dignity, and self-determination.

Over three decades, our services expanded to fight alongside communities for justice across the reproductive lifespan—from adolescence through menopause. After 30 years of working closely within our own community, we chose to expand our care to the broader public.

Today, BA NIA Inc. is a Black women–led reproductive justice organization, humbled to carry forward decades of knowledge, resistance, and healing—working to reduce infant and maternal mortality one birth at a time.
